Sails in the Desert

Sails in the Desert is a 4* resort in the heart of Australia’s Red Center near Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta. However it’s really a no-frills place, despite the spa, swimming pool and Mulgara Gallery, which features indigenous art. The hiking, touring and cultural experiences remain the highlights at Sails. Although very comfortable with lots of things to do, there is little sense of place. You will get to see it all, and learn a lot about the local culture and the rock, but a certain magic is certainly lost at such a huge resort. We strongly recommend getting up early and walking to one of the viewing areas to watch the sunrise without the hoards.

Also, arranging to do a walk around the perimeter on your own is another way to quietly absorb the mystery of the area. We highly recommend visiting the Field of Lights, which is an area of several acres (as far as the eye can see) of softly colored lights. There are paths to wander thru the field… a very pleasant, rather ethereal experience. The tour even includes canapes and drinks! Be sure to visit Kata Tjuta as well!
