Capella Lodge, located on quirky Lord Howe Island, which its fans call “paradise on earth,” is found 375 miles off the coast of Sydney, halfway between Sydney and Auckland, New Zealand.

Hills covered with virgin forest (the tops of the hills are cloud forest) and palm and pine trees at the lower levels dot the 11 mile long volcanic remnant. Over it all stands the majestic Mt. Gower. Most of the island is surrounded by a coral reef, so the beaches are very calm and the water stays pretty warm year-round. Go out on a glass bottom boat or snorkel and you are sure to see some interesting fish including endemic species and very nice coral (though not as colorful as the coral on the Great Barrier Reef). This is the most southerly reef in the world. On land, you will see marsh hens, which is an endemic species similar to a kiwi, the sacred kingfisher (another endemic), as well as lots of other bird species. Because it is so small, you see all the coastal birds as well as forest birds. It is the most fascinating little bio system!

Bike to town, comprising a very good little museum, post offices, two cafes, general store and food market, and then if you decide you don’t really want to ride your bike back up the hill to the lodge, you can avail yourself of the free phone at the post office and just ask someone to come and get you. How much better does it get! Finally, do make sure to indulge in the 7-course tasting menu one evening. However, every meal is simply delicious and unique.
