Explore Zambia, one of our favorite under-the-radar destinations, on an exclusive 9-night safari. This itinerary combines game viewing and sight-seeing in Zambia with three nights in Botswana’s Okavango Delta for an unforgettable journey into the heart of southern Africa.
Begin by flying into Little Vumbura, unobtrusively set on a small island lush with Okavango forest. Camp sits on a community-owned concession made up of floodplain grasses, winding waterways and large rivers with an abundance of wildlife. Experience the diversity and beauty of the area from open 4x4 Land Rover, traditional dugout canoe, or on a guided walk to soak in the smaller wonders of life in the bush. At night, you may spot aardwolf, serval, large spotted genet and lesser bushbaby, while bigger game will mark your daytime excursions.
Continue to Livingstone, Zambia for your next three nights. Toka Leya overlooks the Zambezi River from raised safari-style tents with plenty of creature comforts. Relax at the spa, on your private wooden deck or outdoor bath, or fill your days with sightseeing and cultural exchange. Visiting Victoria Falls is a must: stand in awe of its roaring waters as your guide illuminates the flora, fauna, culture, and history of this special place. You may also opt to track rhino in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) scouts monitor the rhino 24 hours a day; this allows guests to travel nearby by vehicle and then track the rhino on foot, accompanied by the scout. Museum tours, visits to Mkuni Market and a nearby village, river cruises and more are all available during your stay.
Spend your last three nights in the Busanga Concession of Kafue National Park. Shumba Camp is situated in the centre of the Busanga Plains close to permanent water and within easy access of the teeming floodplains. Day and night game drives are a staple, with opportunity to spot game such as puku, red lechwe, buffalo and wildebeest, in addition to the famous lions of Kafue, known for lazing around camp and on the walkways. Cheetah and wild dog can also be spotted. Guests can enjoy the views from above by hot air balloon or, when the area is flooded, venture out by boat. This remote area experienced extensive poaching in decades past, but has since become a key area for conservation and wildlife management. Shumba Camp works with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife game scouts and anti-poaching units, and research into the area’s lions to strategize for more sustainable population management.
