Walking With Maasai

Highlights

Gain an intimate glimpse into Maasai tribal life in the East African hills during this 9-night Kenya safari. Begin with a restful overnight just outside the bustle of Nairobi and get your first taste of wildlife viewing in Nairobi National Park. The following day, plunge into adventure as you’re transferred to the heart of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Spend the next five nights exploring the plains, valley forests, and looming escarpments of the Maasai homeland with your local Maasai guides. They will lead you along trails developed over hundreds of years of nomadism as you revel in the fresh air, open wilderness, and camaraderie of a true mobile walking safari. Days will typically split between morning and afternoon walks, with a tasty meal break midday. At any time, opt to pause and rest, or simply soak in the views before continuing on with your trek; the journey is personalized along the way to fit your needs. Each night, camp under the stars in a new location, some protected by riverine forest, others perched high with views across the valleys. Settle into the slower rhythms of traveling by foot and soak in the smaller, quieter delights left unexamined when traveling by car. Don’t think this means sacrificing comfort though. All your camps along the way will feature comfortable African bell tents complete with bedrolls, towels, linens and wash basin.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to connect with Maasai culture, getting to know individuals from the surrounding tribes on a personal level as they guide you across Kenya. With your companions, learn about Maasai cultural traditions, rites of passage, and lore, and gain first-hand insights into contemporary life as a tribesman in the face of modernity, the unique details of the surrounding ecosystem and the abundant wildlife that call it home.

Ready to give your legs a break? The second part of your journey takes you to an intimate camp surrounded by 80,000 acres of private conservancy. Your tented camp here captures the essence of traditional safaris with updated style; five marquee tents perch on hardwood decks, simply and elegantly appointed and plenty of views. Over the next three nights, delight in private, open-top game drives across Mara North – or choose to return to two legs with optional bush walks – and spend one evening in ‘The Nest.’ This sleep-out treehouse is accessed a short distance from the main camp, ensconced in trees and looking out onto the river below.
