We love the Serengeti, but we also love exploring beyond the traditional highlights. This 10-night journey takes travelers into southern Tanzania’s hidden gems where privacy and wildlife are both at a premium.
Begin with a night of rest at Oyster Bay after your international flight. Then it’s time to start exploring with three nights in the Selous Game Reserve, Africa’s largest wildlife area. Admire its savannas, woodlands, forests and sand river channels all surrounding the Rufiji River, the lifeblood of the reserve, which flows through the northern part of the Selous into the Indian Ocean. The reserve is home to lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo, as well as ne third of all the wild dogs in the world. Stay at Sand Rivers Selous, where guests can game drive through the park’s expanses, or explore on walking safaris in the cool of early morning. Spend an afternoon boating on the water, spying pods of hippos and sunning crocodiles. During one of your nights here, walk with your guide to own personal campsite deep in the bush for a true wilderness experience under the stars.
Next continue to Ruaha National Park, with dramatic scenery of rolling hills, large open plains, groves of skeletal baobabs and, along its southern border, the wide Great Ruaha River and the dry Mwagusi River. For three nights, stay at the small, family-owned Ikuka Safari Camp, complete with swimming pool to cool off between activities. Game drive with your guide or walk the same path as elephants, hear a lion roar in the distance, and get a full sensory experience tracking animals with your guide and park ranger. Set up high on the Ikuka escarpment overlooking the Mwagusi river, each of the six tents lounge area complete with comfortable leather seating leading out onto large private balconies.
After exploring Tanzania’s secret southern parks, enjoy your final four nights on your own private island in the azure Indian Ocean. Set on marine reserve dedicated to the conservation of the region’s sea turtles, dugongs, dolphins and whale sharks, as well as the preservation and rehabilitation of the Shungimbili coral reef, you can rest assured these waters are pristine, and perfect for the island’s eco-friendly activities for your own up-close encounters. Swimming with whale sharks in particular is an experience unlike any other which we highly recommend. When you’re ready for some R&R, lounge beachside and admire the views, take a lap in the glass rim-flow swimming pool, or opt indoors and indulge with the indoor aquarium, Steinway grand piano, or wine collection. Your stay here is tailored entirely around your needs and preferences, with full access to the island’s resources.
