Join conservation groups in Zimbabwe for 4 nights immersed in lion protection efforts. Stay at Khulu Bush Camp, overlooking an ancient riverbed known to attract a variety of the greatest wildlife and birdlife in Hwange National Park. Your days will be marked by morning and afternoon game drives in search of big cats, along with special conservation activities focused on the lion prides that call Hwange home. Gain insights into the biology, behavioral ecology and interspecific species competition from Dr. Paul Funston, an internationally recognized large carnivore biologist who has spent time in the field with many lion researchers across the African landscape. He has intimate knowledge of the threats facing lions and how these can best be mitigated. He is both very practical and hands on, while also able to think big and push for improvements for large cats.
Special evening presentations will further your knowledge on the history of human-lion conflict in the region. Learn about collaborations between conservation groups and statutory authorities, local governments and communities, and NGOs to address culturally-specific lion killing; human-lion conflict mitigation by up-skilling young men to work as herders; address bush-meat poaching; and reduce levels of legal trophy hunting. Adequately protecting and managing these parks is critical for the long-term conservation of the lion.
