Liuwa Plain

Remote & Untraveled Zambia

Highlights

Liuwa Plain, is a remote National Park in Western Zambia run by the non-profit African Parks, the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) and the Barotse Royal Establishment - the traditional government of the Lozi people. Liuwa is a vast open plain that lies west of the Zambezi River, on the Angolan Border. The plain is flat - horizon to horizon and under the huge skies run 30,000 blue wildebeest, the second largest wildebeest migration in Africa. Herds of zebra, tsessebe and lechwe also graze the plains and are stalked by predators such as wild dog, hyena and cheetah. Liuwa also supports globally important bird populations, with more than 330 bird species recorded.

Liuwa’s grassy plains dotted are with woodland islands which become true islands in the wet season between December and May. Matamanene Camp is set on one of these wooded islands. Matamanene Camp, has only four tents and is the only safari camp in all of Liuwa Plain, the only property in 1400 square miles! The camp is a classic safari style and tents are large and comfortably furnished and set under a canopy of trees.

But the Liuwa Plain is really about the experience not the accommodation. Exploring the plains and woodlands is an amazing experience. Your guide will take you out and you have the choice of either walking or driving. There are lagoons and waterholes, literally filled with birds to walk around and there are miles and miles of open plains to drive through, searching for wildlife. The pattern of the days will vary but will be based around an early start with a light breakfast, returning for an early lunch. A siesta before afternoon tea and the afternoon drive. A sundowner out on the plains and then returning at dark to camp.

After the stunning, remote beauty of the Liuwa Plain, you will fly to South Luangwa where you will spend four nights at Tafika Camp enjoying game-drives, walks, bike rides and village visit. This homey, family-owned property offers a huge range of activities along with the excellent game-viewing of South Luangwa. For your final two nights in Zambia you will head to Livingstone and explore Victoria Falls and all the fabulous activities the area has to offer. While in Livingstone you will stay at Tongabezi.
