This 12-day expedition combines rich cultural experiences with spectacular wildlife viewing. From the grasslands and riverine forests of the Laikipia Plateau to the stark and rocky surroundings of the world’s largest alkaline lake, to the hustle and bustle of Nairobi’s city center, to the splendor of the Maasai Mara’s rolling savannah, this itinerary has it all.
Start in Samburu territory for a mobile camping experience featuring culture and wildlife that’s unlike anything you have seen before. Cross the valleys, mountains and deserts of Laikipia, a massive region consisting of private ranches, communal grazing areas and game reserves that form an area larger than any national park in the country, accompanied by an experienced Samburu guide. Learn about the area’s abundant wildlife, or better yet, leave the well-worn roads behind on horseback as you scan the horizon for game. Visit Samburu villages to engage with local craftsman and visit nursery schools. Spend each night in a new location as you traverse Kenya’s dramatically breathtaking landscapes.
After four magical nights under the stars, spend a restful evening at Ol Malo Lodge. Here, soak in your private infinity pool before retiring for a restful night in one of their rock and olivewood cottages. You are no longer sleeping under the stars but the views of the dramatic hills and valleys of the Laikipia plateau make up for it. Then, continue your safari at The Emakoko, a boutique lodge in Nairobi National Park. Rest up but find time to check out the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the Giraffe Centre or any number of cultural excursions in the city.
From Nairobi, fly to Lake Turkana for two nights in the Kenyan Rift Valley, in northern Kenya. Lobolo Camp, which consists of eight en suite safari tents, is the base to experience the unique Turkana culture, and, the lake far from the madding crowd. Explore the parched volcanic beaches, granite outcrops and lava flows. The lake’s shores have revealed some of the world’s oldest fossil finds, from dinosaurs to early Man, discovered by the famous paleontologists – the Leakey family. Here, you will have the opportunity to engage with Turkana tribe members. Experience their culture firsthand as you boat across the lake to explore the middle island of Lake Turkana, which houses three spectacular crater lakes – Flamingo Lake, Crocodile Lake, and Tilapia Lake. Opt to stay on dryland and cast a line from shore to try your hand at fishing.
Finish up in the famed Maasai Mara ecosystem. Stay at Mara Plains, an intimate camp situated on the 35,000 acre private Olare Motorogi Conservancy. Get out of the vehicle to experience the Mara grasslands on foot. Learn to appreciate the ecosystem’s abundant birdlife, identify native trees and plants and track wildlife, assisted by your guide. If you’re ready to put your feet up, traditional game drives and night drives are available throughout the conservancy. Search for lion, leopard and abundant plains games across vast stretches of land. Complete your Kenya cultural circuit with a visit to a local Maasai community. Stop to speak with the women beading, and absorb the beauty of Kenya’s people. This is the full Kenyan package, with authentic experiences, culture, luxury and nature.
