Glamping & Gorilla Trekking

in Virunga National Park
Virunga National Park

Highlights

Get off the beaten path with gorillas in Virunga National Park. Virunga is inspiring – it is Africa’s oldest national park, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the continent’s most biologically diverse protected area. It is also home to a quarter of the world’s approximately 900 remaining mountain gorillas. This itinerary features once-in-a-lifetime gorilla encounters for the adventurous couple or group of friends.

Arrive in Kigali for a transfer to Gisenyi, where you will meet your representative who will help you cross the border into Goma. Overnight at Lac Kivu Lodge. In the morning, continue to Bukima Camp in Virunga N.P. Check in at camp before your first gorilla trek. The trek is approx. 3-6 hours but varies depending on where the gorillas are that day. Return to camp around lunchtime and spend the afternoon enjoying your surroundings.. The two active volcanoes against the night sky are spectacular. Enjoy walk in walk out access for your second day of mountain gorilla trekking. Set off from camp to meet another gorilla family for a completely different experience than your first trek.

Then transfer to Mikeno Lodge near the Virunga N.P. headquarters. Visit the orphan mountain gorillas at the Senkwekwe Centre or put your feet up with views of the surrounding Congolese rainforest. Spend a full day at Mikeno Lodge known for its pristine forest and home to a variety of birds, such as the great blue Turaco, and an abundance of primates including: Blue Monkey, Black and White Colobus Monkey, Bush Babies, Olive Baboon and L’hoest Monkey.

After breakfast, drive to the base of the Nyiragongo Volcano to begin your hike to the summit. The lodge provides you with a rucksack containing supplies and gear as well as a chef who will prepare all your meals and snacks on the trip. It’s about a 4-7 hour hike to the summit, where you will spend the night in rustic shelters. Enjoy one of the most spectacular views – the biggest lava lake on the planet.

The next day return to Kigali for your return flight home.
