Freediving in Southern Mozambique

Highlights

Mozambique is a classic beach destination for lovers of nature and wildlife. The Indian Ocean is chockfull of one-of-a-kind sea creatures, not to mention that swimming in the warm ocean water is simply delightful. Led by expert freediving instructors Hanli Prinsloo and Peter Marshall (founders of I AM WATER Foundation), this 6-night itinerary in Southern Mozambique is an exciting foray into marine safari-going.

Easily accessible from South Africa, White Pearl Mozambique is situated on a private, white sand beach. Nestled in a sheltered bay on Mozambique's Lagoon Coast and poised amongst the dunes on timber stilts, 21 luxurious suites are designed to take advantage of the beautiful natural setting, while protecting the fragile ecosystems beneath them.

Each morning, wake up with yoga sessions designed to prepare your body and mind for freediving. After a short theoretical introduction and safety discussion, start with a freediving training session on the rope, working on equalization, breath-hold and general water comfort. Then begins the main event: a marine safari in search of dolphins. (Mantas and whale sharks are also possibilities along this remarkably pristine stretch.) In the afternoons, recline on the wide pool deck or head down to the beach for some R&R. Reconvene at sunset for evening yoga followed by dinner.

Midway through the week, enjoy a full day of rest on the beach, or opt to walk or horseback ride to a local market for souvenirs and local flavor. On the last full day, travel further north than before to an exquisite coral reef shallow enough to enjoy on freedive. See green turtles, moray eels, clown fish and a myriad of other reef fishes at this pristine hard coral playground.

We suggest combining this itinerary with Cape Town or a safari extension.

*Please note: All of your days follow a rhythm conducive to optimal freediving, yoga and relaxation experiences. However, you will have a weather dependent schedule as the wind and swell will be decisive for which of the dives you do every day as your safety and wellbeing is our top priority.

Moreover, all actions are guided by the highest standards of responsible marine megafauna interaction. The animals’ wellbeing is a priority at all times. Should the I AM WATER team get the impression that your presence (in and out of water) stresses or disturbs the animal, they will distance you immediately even if this might limit your interaction with the animal(s).
