Freediving in Baja Mexico

Highlights

Cabo Pulmo and Isla Espiritu Santo are national marine parks located in the East Cape region of of Mexico's Baja California Sur. Known as the jewel of this region, the shallow bays of Cabo Pulmo Park are home to one of three living reefs and the only hard coral reef in North America. Explore the marine life in the ‘world’s aquarium’ with expert freedivers Hanli Prinsloo and Peter Marshall (founders of I AM WATER Foundation) on a transformational 7-day group trip.

Begin on Isla Espiritu Santo, a national park in the Sea of Cortez and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marine life here is top-notch, and the island itself is simply stunning, with towering cliffs, sandy bays, lava rock formations and rock art left by the Guaycura and Pericu Indians. Camp Cecil will be your home base on the island. A true eco retreat, the camp combines barefoot luxury with sustainability and guests will have their own luxury tent directly on the beach. This is the perfect place for snorkeling, hiking, and exploring pristine beaches without the crowds.

Settle in before a theoretical introduction to the art of freediving with Hanli and Peter, followed by your first sundown yoga session, practicing calming breathing techniques and focused relaxation. The following day, put theory into practice as you freedive in open water, perhaps spending some quality time with the playful sea lions that call this area home. The afternoon is at your leisure: strolling the white sand beaches, paddle boarding or kayaking from the bay, or simply relaxing at camp. You will also spend a day at the Bay of La Paz, for intimate encounters with whale sharks, the largest cartilaginous fish in the sea.

Your last three nights will be at a traditional Mexican hacienda in the scenic and rugged Cabo Pulmo region. Spend your days diving with massive schools of Jack fish and other marine creatures while you practice depth training on the rope. Few place on the planet allow you to see such massive schools due to over-fishing; this inspiring experience will provide a personal understanding of human-animal interdependency as you lose yourself in a great swirling of silver fish. Each afternoon, return to your hacienda for relaxing afternoons followed by yoga and dinner.

*Please note: All of your days follow a rhythm conducive to optimal freediving, yoga and relaxation experiences. However, you will have a weather dependent schedule as the wind and swell will be decisive for which of the dives you do every day; your safety and wellbeing is our top priority.

Moreover, all actions are guided by the highest standards of responsible marine megafauna interaction. The animals’ wellbeing is a priority at all times. Should the I AM WATER team get the impression that your presence (in and out of water) stresses or disturbs the animal, they will distance you immediately even if this might limit your interaction with the animal(s).
