Conservation & Culture Safari in South Africa

Begin with four nights at Kensington Place in vibrant Cape Town, the cultural capital of South Africa. Clean, modern lines dominate the eight guest rooms, and create a cool and calm retreat in the midst of the city. Over the course of your four days, we recommend exploring the natural beauty of the peninsula in addition to the galleries, restaurants, and shops of the city. Spend a day kayaking or diving off the coast, sightseeing iconic landmarks on a guided tour of the Cape, hike up Table Mountain to soak in the extraordinary ocean views and fresh air, or cycle through the rolling Winelands as you make your way between wine estates for tastings. There’s no shortage of activities, whatever your tastes, and we love arranging just the right match for you.

From Cape Town, begin the safari portion of your journey with three exceptional nights at Thanda Safari Private Game Reserve in the heart of South Africa’s Zululand. The reserve spans 35,000 acres and offers guests a host of hands-on conservation and culture-based activities outside traditional game drives through the bushveld. We’ve worked with Thanda to create a very special three-day experience exclusively for our travelers.

During your stay, spend a full day with the reserve’s rhino monitoring team, which oversees the daily observation and data collection of both the white and black rhino found in the area. Leave with your expert guides before sunrise, when chances are high to spot these elusive animals. Learn about the team’s process, goals, and challenges, in addition to the rich ecology of the rhinos’ home, their behavior, feeding patterns and vegetation preferences as well as the ongoing threats faced by the species. Spend most of the morning tracking with your guides on foot through the bush—a truly exhilarating experience unlike any other. Not only are you participating in key conservation and education work, you’ll have the chance to come face to face with one of Africa’s most majestic, and endangered, creatures.

It’s not all about the wildlife, though. You will also get to participate in Thanda’s Footsteps in the Zulu experience—a one-of-a-kind cultural interaction with the local Zulu people. Get to know “the people of Heaven” on a community excursion following in the footsteps of Zulu ancestors with your own Zulu guide from the village. View a traditional homestead and village in person, visit a sangoma (a spiritual medium and healer), explore the Zululand battlefields of King Shaka, learn about Nguni cattle direct from Zulu herdsmen, join in on community projects or celebrations, or meet the students at the Star for Life school. This is a fully-tailored experience according to your interests, preferences, and schedule.

After the excitement of the bush, take a few nights to relax beachside at Thonga Beach Lodge in KwaZulu Natal. Thonga’s situated ideally for you to explore inland foliage and shimmering lakes along with sandy beaches and warm crystalline waters perfect for snorkeling. Stay in one of only twelve thatched bush suites and spend your days strolling through the coastal forests with your guide, learning about local villages and customs, sipping sundowners by the lake shore, or hitting the waves for kayaking and scuba diving. Depending on the season, you may get to witness sea turtles hatching on the shores – a unique and inspiring sight!
