“You know you are truly alive when you're living among lions.”
–Karen Blixen, from Out of Africa
Nowadays, it’s possible to go on safari without sacrificing an ounce of comfort; however, staying in luxury safari camps and lodges with polished marble and enclosed glass walls can sometimes defeat the purpose of immersing you in the African bush. For those adventurous travelers who want to go back to the basics of safari, Zambia is the place.
This 9-night itinerary is the Extraordinary Journeys version of old-school safari. It’s a classic mix of South Luangwa National Park and Lower Zambezi in a destination that’s classic old-school Africa. This is an unrivalled wildlife experience in one of the last unspoilt wilderness regions.
Start at Mfuwe Lodge, set in the most prolific game area of the South Luangwa. Relax and unwind, or set out on your first afternoon game drive of the journey, before traveling deeper into the South Luangwa the following morning.
With just four tents on the edge of a permanent lagoon, Chindeni Bush Camp offers a truly breathtaking setting. There’s something about sleeping under canvas that ignites a sense of adventure in everyone. Keep a lookout for huge “fishing parties” of migratory birds from your private verandah or set out from camp on bushwalks in search of elephants, zebra and more.
Next up: You have the option to walk (3 ½ hrs.) to Bilimungwe, set along the Luangwa River. Bilimungwe overlooks three waterholes with many herds of resident elephant. Four thatched / grass chalets sit on stilts with magnificent views of the resident elephants in the waterholes. Enjoy the sunrise over the Chindeni Hills or sit by a fire on the edge of the Luangwa Valley.
End at Anabezi Luxury Tented Camp in the Lower Zambezi. Its 11 spacious luxury tents are raised on timber platforms over both the Zambezi River and the Mushika River floodplain. Year-round grazing on the plain ensures spectacular game viewing from the comfort of your tent. The camp offers both land- and water-based activities including traditional game drives (with a maximum of four guests per vehicle), night drives, walking safaris into the Kulefu woodlands and surrounding areas, as well as canoeing safaris along the Zambezi River, boating and fishing. For avid birdwatchers, over 500 species of birds live in the Lower Zambezi alone.
