Why is African art so hot right now? From major South African artists William Kentridge and Dan Halter to Ghana’s El Anatsui to Ethiopian artist Elias Sime… the rest of the world is paying attention (and we are too). This itinerary centers on the 5th edition of The Cape Town Art Fair from February 17 - 19, 2017 at the Cape Town International Convention Center (CTICC). The fair presents the best of both contemporary Pan-African and international art, along with a curated program which includes art talks and walks by contemporary art world professionals along with other special programs. (Psst: View Artsy's exclusive preview of the Cape Town Art Fair here.)
Spend four nights (beginning on February 16, 2017) at Ellerman House. Formerly an elegant Cape Edwardian mansion, this luxury hotel sits perched on the slopes of Lion’s Head in the prestigious Bantry Bay residential area in Cape Town with one of the most beautiful ocean views. Stroll through Ellerman Contemporary Gallery, which houses one of, if not THE, single most important private collection of modern South African art, as well as exploring the many other great art galleries the city has to offer. Experience the best the contemporary art world has to offer at The Cape Town Art Fair alongside world-renowned artists, curators and collectors.
Next up you’ll be transferred to the Cape Winelands for more artistic inspiration at Delaire Graff Estate on the magnificent Helshoogte Mountain Pass, between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. The surrounding winelands are home to superb art galleries. Be sure to visit the SMAC Gallery (Stellenbosch Modern and Contemporary Gallery) and the Rupert Museum. At Delaire, enjoy delicious meals at the Delaire Graff Restaurant or Indochine Restaurant and massages at the Spa. You’ll spend four nights here and on the last day (February 24), you’ll be transferred to Cape Town Airport.
For the complete package, extend your adventure to Singita or Kwandwe (malaria free) for a world-class Big Five safari.
P.S. Come back in autumn 2017 for the opening of the 100,000-square-foot Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, the biggest and most impressive art museum in Africa. And sitting on top of it will be a fabulous new hotel … The Silo (opening March 1, 2017).
