Camp Hwange

Camp Hwange is located in a quieter area in the north of Hwange National Park. Only a three-hour road transfer from Victoria Falls, this is a convenient way to see the Falls and go on game drives with top-notch guides in one easy trip. Partly owned by professional guide and walking guide extraordinaire, Dave Carson, it sells itself as one of the top walking safari camps in Zimbabwe, although it is by no means exclusively a walking experience, and game drives explore a scenically beautiful area of the park. This area has a different landscape than the rest of Hwange with more water pans and rocky hills.

We really like the design of this Camp Hwange and find it to be one of the most beautiful in Zimbabwe. It is clean and simple with sophisticated décor. The camp’s expansive and canvas mess area is open onto the campfire area and the waterhole beyond. The eight tented chalets are sizeable, comfortable, unpretentious, and tasteful, epitomizing the tented safari experience. Although there are no family units or swimming pool, the chalets are big enough for an extra bed and kids are welcome. There is room for improvement at Camp Hwange regarding food and service, although neither should totally hinder a guest’s experience.

January and February are the wettest months and the camp closes periodically over this time, when birding takes preference over the big game. During the dry months between April and October, game-viewing is at its best, but it gets VERY cold during the early mornings and nights and you’ll need to be well prepared for this.
