North Luangwa is a very remote and off-the-beaten track destination with only a few properties. Our favorite area in North Luangwa is along the Mwaleshi River, a tributary of the Luangwa River. In the dry season, the Mwaleshi River recedes and leaves water pools that attract wildlife. No game drives are allowed in the Mwaleshi area. Only walking safaris are permitted, giving you a real sense of closeness to the wildlife. Our favorite property here is Mwaleshi Camp, owned by the same family that operates Tafika, one of our favorite properies in South Luangwa.

The dry season (June-October), when game-viewing is at its peak, is the only time you can visit North Luangwa. Access to the park is virtually impossible in the wet season and camps are closed.

North Luangwa is great for avid walkers and those looking for a real off-the-beaten-path experience. As a result, although it is beautiful, we wouldn’t recommend North Luangwa for first-time safari-goers.
