About This Accommodation

Busanga is a basic camp under the Wilderness Safari’s banner, located in Northern Kafue’s Busanga Concession. We are very excited about Wilderness’ presence here. This is an area which suffered from a lot of poaching, and since Busanga’s existence, the wildlife is already on its way back and making it a great area for lion sightings.

Built under canvas, this pretty camp has four cozy rooms with en-suite bathrooms and decks for basking in the remote landscape and enjoying the light over the plains. Busanga’s central areas provide a relaxing atmosphere where visitors can watch for lechwe and puku as well as the resident lion pride which is often seen from the camp.

Activities include day and night game drives and walks as well as a trip to the hippo pool, a real highlight.

Perfectly set on a palm island, the camp is open between June and October. The camp is accessed via helicopter from the Busanga Airstrip.

For a relatively small surcharge, we suggest you upgrade to Shumba as the service and accommodation are of a higher standard. Busanga Bush Camp has adequate service and guiding, but is quite basic with minimal luxuries.

  • The remote Busanga Plains is the gem of the 5 million hectare Kafue ecosystem; a vast unique seasonal floodplain lies surrounded by miombo woodlands and is home to thousands of red lechwe, puku, wildebeest, zebra and less common species such a roan and sable antelope and the distinctive Lichtenstein’s hartebeest. Mega-fauna like buffalo and hippo are common along the water channels, while elephant emerge from the woodlands. Lion prides – with characteristically large, dark-maned males – dominate the predators but cheetah, leopard, spotted hyaena and wild dog occur. Busanga Bush Camp is the original camp of the plains and it’s the authentic, rustic feel of its four tents is reminiscent of the original pioneers here.
  • At the end of October, Shumba and Busanga Bush Camps close for the rainy season. Due to rising water levels, we operate for only five months of the year and at the end, the camps are packed up in their entirety – to be reopened at the beginning of June the next year. The last few days of the season were filled with fun, as our guests and staff – the Busanga Family who know the area well and add to the personality of the area – can attest.
  • The expansive, grassy Busanga Plains are the jewel in Kafue National Park's crown. Busanga Bush Camp and Shumba Camp, operated by Wilderness Safaris, are both situated within the heart of the Plains and offer unparalleled wildlife diversity, unpretentious luxury and panoramic views across the game-filled plains. Unique wildlife encounters take place on day and night game drives, boat trips or from the spectacular vantage of a hot air balloon -- perhaps Africa's most exclusive hot air balloon safari. The inimitable Busanga Pride is renowned for their fig tree-climbing antics, daytime antelope hunting and even using the shade and vantage point of the camp decks -- a wilderness experience that should be on every bucket list!
