Johannesburg is South Africa’s economic capital, largest city, and home to OR Tambo International Airport, a regional hub for Southern Africa. For many travelers Johannesburg serves only as an overnight at the beginning or the end of their trip, but for those who want to explore the city for a few nights there are a range of activities available. South Africa’s national Apartheid Museum is in Johannesburg and is absolutely fascinating. We also recommend a tour of Soweto Township by car or by bike, including a visit to the Kliptown Youth Program.

If you’re really just looking for a bed to sleep in between your flights, we use InterContinental Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport or the Protea or the Southern Sun. If you are spending a few nights in the city our favorite properties are in the suburbs of Melrose and Sandton. For those wanting a 4 or 5 star experience we recommend the Saxon Hotel, 54 on Bath, and The Residence, while Fairlawns and the Peech Hotel are lovely properties at a lower price point.
