Cottar’s 1920s Camp

Cottars 1920’s Safari Camp, in its own exclusive concession bordering the Maasai Mara, is a throwback to an age of British tradition. This stylish colonial camp has an elegance that encourages you to relish in the glamour and opulance of a bygone era. Owned by Calvin Cottar, one of the most respected private guides in Kenya today, the camp has deep roots in the early days of African safari and furthers the family legacy through its impressive land management and conservation efforts to this day.

Suitable for the most discerning travelers, Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp has individually decorated tents tastefully appointed with antique campaign-style furnishings. Each canvas tent is set privately among lush trees, with views into the nearby hills of Tanzania. Families are can be easily accommodated in either the camp’s family tent or in Cottar’s Homestead, the exclusive-use house on the property.

Cottar’s main areas consist of a large dining tent where excellent meals are served in a sociable environment, and a lounge area for sipping cocktails after a busy day game viewing. Spend your afternoons relaxing by the stylish pool area or dozing in a hammock before a bush meal enjoyed around a campfire.

In addition to game drives, activities include bush walks, swimming in a waterfall, fishing, market day and a visit to the local village. A massage is included in your stay and a canvas bush bath is another highlight. Cottar’s is known for its excellent guides, and when booked in advance, Calvin Cottar himself is available as a private guide for interested travelers.

Cottar’s has always been well-placed for the wildebeest migration in June, September and October when the wildebeest were crossing the Mara River, but now that the area is a completely private concession, the year-round wildlife is likely to get even better. In addition, Cottar’s was recently certified by the Zeitz Foundation’s Long Run Initiative, meaning it meets some of the most stringent sustainability and responsible-tourism criteria.

This is a highly recommendable property which we love for all guests looking for an upmarket and memorable visit to the Maasai Mara.
