About This Accommodation
Bukima Tented Camp is a simple tented camp at the border of the park and one of the main starting points for gorilla treks in Virunga. The camp was originally built for researchers, but is now used primarily by trekkers.
You cannot get a more convenient starting point for a gorilla trek anywhere in East Africa! The ranger and trackers come right to the mess tent in the morning and do their pre-trek briefing as you finish you coffee. You hike straight out of the camp into the forest to find the gorillas. Even guests who stay at Mikeno will pass through Bukima camp, often stopping for a post-trek lunch or snack before driving back to Mikeno.
Everything about Bukima, from the tents to the food is simple yet comfortable. Each of the camps six tents features an ensuite bathroom with running cold water, flush toilets and hot bucket showers. Lighting is provided by solar panels. The beds are great and after dinner you are likely to find a hot water bottle warming the sheets for you, important as the nights at more than 6500 feet are cool! English language skills among the staff are somewhat limited but that doesn’t stop them from being warm and welcoming.
The views from anywhere in camp are spectacular. To the south, the view is dominated by Mt. Mikeno, whose 4437m (14,560 foot) summit towers over the gorilla sector. Across the valley is Nyiragongo volcano, whose lava lake colors the sky with a red glow on clear nights.
Bukima is about 2 hours from Goma and 1.5 hours from Mikeno Lodge. Be warned the final 4.5 miles take almost an hour to cover on a very bumpy road!
There is not much to do at Bukima other than the gorilla treks so we recommend spending only 1-2 nights depending how many treks you are doing.
