Ultimate Southern Africa Itinerary

This is the ultimate itinerary for Southern Africa. It covers Victoria Falls, the Okavango and Chobe in Botswana, Namibia and ends in Cape Town. The whole itinerary isn't for everyone but it will give you some great ideas.

Days 1 - 3 ~ Livingstone ~ Islands of Siankaba

Upon arrival in Livingstone you will be greeted by an Extraordinary Journeys representative who will transfer you by road to Islands of Siankaba where you will spend two nights.

At more than twice the size of Niagara Falls it’s no surprise that Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Five separate falls plunge more than 328 feet into the chasm which separates Zimbabwe from Zambia. Keep an eye out for elephant, hippo and other wildlife. Enjoy your gin and tonic as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the whole area in unbelievable array of reds, yellows and purples. Let your adventurous side play as you partake in optional activities like a swim in Devil’s Pool on the lip of the falls, whitewater rafting, elephant interactions, bungee jumping or a helicopter or micro-light flight. Game drives, canoeing or a sunset cruise on the Zambezi are also easily organized.

After enjoying all that Victoria Falls has to offer during the day, you will stay each night on an island in the middle of the Zambezi River. At Islands of Siankaba, just 24 miles upstream from the Falls, you will fall asleep to the lullaby of water lapping against the sandy shore at this luxury lodge for just twelve guests. The uniquely designed chalets are constructed of teak and canvas tenting, are set in the tree canopy with private balconies that extend over the river. All chalets have en suite bathrooms, mini bars, ceiling fans, mosquito nets and private safes.

Common areas including the dining room, lounge, bar and swimming pool, are located on a larger island linked by suspension bridges and walkways in the tree canopy to the guest chalets on the smaller island. These winding walkways keep guests safe and protect the fragile riverine environment.

Days 3 - 5 ~ Chobe National Park ~ Savute Under Canvas

This morning you cross the border into Botswana and drive to Kasane for your scheduled flight to Savute Airstrip. You will spend two nights at Savute Under Canvas a comfortable and spacious mobile tent.

Savute, a remote and wild corner of Chobe National Park is situated south of the Chobe River. This is an area of open savanna grassland through which a seasonal river used to spill out into a marsh. It last flowed in the 1980s. Today, the channel and marsh are usually dry except after heavy rains, but several artificial waterholes offer great wildlife viewing. Depending on the time of year, huge animal concentrations are attracted to this area, and Savute is excellent for lion and other predator viewing.

Savute Under Canvas tent, Botswana

Savute under Canvas features just five en-suite safari tents, carefully positioned in an exclusive semi-permanent campsite in the expansive Savute Corner of central Chobe National Park, offering exceptional game viewing opportunities. Each tent boasts a comfortable double bed, en-suite bathroom, flush w.c. and bucket shower – this is the ultimate in wilderness camping. The guest areas comprise comfortable tents for dining, meeting for a pre-dinner drink, or just for whiling the time away between safaris – complete with delicious home-baked meals and traditional bush dinners served under the stars.

Days 5 - 7 ~ Okavango ~ Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge

After your morning game activities you will have breakfast and then be transferred to the Savute Airstrip where you will board the shuttle flight to Sandibe. Upon arrival at Chitabe airstrip, you will be transferred to Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge where you will be spending the next two nights.

The Okavango Delta is the earth’s largest inland water system. Its headwaters start in Angola’s western highlands where numerous tributaries join to form the Cubango River. It then flows through Namibia where it is called the Kavango and finally enters Botswana, where it becomes the Okavango. Millions of years ago the Okavango River flowed into a large inland lake called Lake Makgadikgadi (now Makgadikgadi Pans). Tectonic shifts interrupted the flow of the river forming what is now the Okavango Delta, a unique system of waterways that support a vast array of animal and plant life, in what would have otherwise been dry Kalahari savannah.

Sandibe Camp, Botswana

Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge is situated on a permanent channel of the Okavango Delta, adjacent to Moremi Game Reserve. With exclusive traversing rights over 270 km2 of wilderness in a private concession, this site was specifically chosen for its extraordinary beauty and proximity to the game-rich grassy plains.

Tucked away under a cool forest canopy, Sandibe is just a few meters from the water. Open air showers in your cottage encourage a feeling of being a part of the forest. Sitting and dining area are surrounded by quiet decks with hammocks slung to take advantage of calming views and soft breezes. At night, a constellation of candles illuminate the boma where your al fresco pan African banquet is served. Explore the area with twice-daily game drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles, guided nature walks, delta cruises and mokoro excursions.

Days 10/11/12/13 ~ Cape Town ~ More Quarters

After breakfast and a leisurely morning you fly from Sandibe to Maun and onward to to Cape Town. Upon arrival you will be taken to More Quarters where you will have a two bedroom luxury apartment for 4 nights.

Nestled between Table Mountain and Table Bay, Cape Town has thrived from its founding as Dutch settlement in 1652 as a supply station for ships of the Dutch East India Company. Cape Town is a sophisticated city with lots to see and do. Work up an appetite for Cape Town’s world class restaurants with a tour of Robbin Island (where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison), a drive to the Cape of Good Hope or a ride up Table Mountain in a cable car.

More Quarters, Cape Town

More Quarters offers the combination of apartment living with the service and hospitality of a hotel. The apartments are ideally located just off Kloof Street, what locals consider the heart of Cape Town. This is partly due to the area being relatively untouched by mainstream tourism, hence adding to the authenticity and value of the Kloof Street address. The ability to walk to both restaurants and boutique shops provides guests with an experience where one becomes part of the city's cosmopolitan way of life. There are exclusive and casual retailers and eateries all within walking distance of More Quarters. The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and the beaches of Camps Bay are just a short drive away, as are most of the city's attractions.

Day 14 ~ En Route

You will have a full day for activities before your transfer to Cape Town Airport this evening in time for your flight home.
