Days 2 / 3 / 4 ~ Ruhengeri ~ Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge

After breakfast you will have the option to visit the Genocide Museum in Kingali. Subsequently, you will be driven to Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, a two hour drive from Kigali, where you will be staying for three nights.
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is owned by a community trust called SACOLA, who uses the lodge’s income to finance socio-economic developments and conservation objectives in the area, including water projects, education, health and informal industries. It is an exciting combination of a top quality lodge and a power for driving the area’s projects, situated on the edge of the Parc National des Volcans in North Eastern Rwanda. The rainforests of the five Virunga Volcanoes are the last refuge of the Mountain Gorilla. The lush slopes of the volcanoes provide an appropriately dramatic natural setting for what is perhaps the most poignant and thrilling wildlife experience to be had anywhere. Roughly half of the world’s wild population of Mountain Gorillas is resident on the Rwandan slopes of the Virungas. Gorilla trekking, which can be strenuous, is not the only activity on offer. Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge provides the perfect base from which to explore this fascinating corner of Africa. Visits to the bustling nearby market town of Ruhengeri, beautiful lakes, the genocide memorials or the community and conservation projects are designed for you to take maximum advantage of this unique area, its
wildlife and its culture. Upon arrival, a late lunch will be served in the main lodge, with its scenic vistas of the Virunga Volcanoes, of the Parc National des Volcans. Afternoon will be left at your own leisure to settle in or to go on a guided bird walk in the surrounds of the lodge. A candlelight dinner in the beautiful calm of the evening will slowly take you into the nightly atmosphere of Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge. The second day will start by an early breakfast served at the lodge, before departing by road to the Parc National des Volcans headquarters, where your gorilla trek through the forest will begin. The time spent walking depends on which family of Gorillas you are allocated to and where they are to be found on that day. You will spend a maximum of one hour with the Gorilla family. After this phenomenal wildlife experience, return to the lodge for lunch. Take time to rest and enjoy the charm of the lodge in the afternoon, before a wonderful dinner. NOTE * Gorilla permit $750 per person per trek - Permits can only be confirmed when paid for. On the third day, start with an early morning breakfast prior to departing for your second gorilla trek, with the possibility of visiting a different Gorilla family. You may also spot golden monkeys or see buffalo, bush duiker and a wide variety of bird life. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, relax or take a drive to the bustling market town of Ruhengeri, nearby, or visit the beautiful lakes of Kivu, Burera, Ruhondo and Karago. There are also the genocide memorials and community and conservation projects, to be visited. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight. Overnight at SABYINYO SILVERBACK LODGE.

Includes: All meals, daily treks.

Days 5 / 6 / 7 ~ Lake Tanganyika ~ Greystoke Mahale

Today you will be driven to Kigali airport, from where you will depart aboard a private chartered Cessna 208 (caravan) that will fly you over the great expanses of Tanzania, to the shores of Africa’s second largest lake, Lake Tanganyika. You will stop in Tanzania to clear passport controls before continuing to the Mahale Mountains. Upon landing board a dhow (traditional wooden boat) for the 90 minute ride to the camp, where you will be spending the next 3 nights trekking into the Mahale Mountains searching for and viewing Chimpanzees.
There are few places left on earth that might rightfully be called Eden, and the Mahale Mountains, on the edge of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, is one of them. On an idyllic beach along the eastern shores of the lake, below a huge story-book tropical forest, you will find the tiny sanctuary of Greystoke Mahale. The slopes of the Mahale Mountains rise behind camp, home to the world's largest known population of chimpanzees. Within hiking distance a group of 60 chimps makes its home. Every day you can venture out into the forest to observe them, our closest relatives, as they groom, wrestle and forage across the leafy floor. The forest itself is special, with eight other species of primate, shyer forest mammals, birds, butterflies, giant vines and waterfalls. And if a day’s ‘chimping’ isn’t enough, you can take a gentle forest hike, go fishing or kayak along the lake shore. There are no roads, no other tourist lodges. But that does not mean that you will have anything less than excellent food and drinks, and a staff that understands the true meaning of hospitality and service. The six open-fronted bandas where you will sleep are set just on the forest line, looking out over the lake, with dressing rooms behind and upstairs chill-out decks; they are designed with flair, generosity and passion for the most demanding of castaways. Overnights at GREYSTOKE MAHALI. Includes: transfers, all activities, drinks, and meals. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
