Responsible Tourism from Sanctuary

Extraordinary Journeys is committed to working with camps and lodges that are pro active in conservation and work in partnership with local communities. These partners use low impact building methods, are energy efficient and are involved in conservation and in the communities near them, supporting schools and hospitals.

Sanctuary Retreats is a great example of this kind of commitment. In addition to offering a number of camps throughout Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Botswana which are great value for money; through Sanctuary Retreats Philanthropy they build lasting relationships with the rural communities in the areas were they operate. SRP helps these communities identify areas of need and and supports long-term and self-sustaining projects with an emphasis on empowerment, skill development, infrastructure, health and education. All SRP projects are supported by Sanctuary staff and guests. The map below gives you a sense of the kind of projects SRP supports.

SRP's recent work in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a great example of the kind of work SRP does. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp has taken the lead in conserving the environment which impacts the local communities surrounding the national park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. One of the main programs that the camp has recently undertaken is the collection of plastic water bottles from the camp. The water bottles will be used to construct a water tank for the Victory Primary School, which is located 2km from Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp. The Head Teacher has requested 4,000 bottles from the camp, which are filled with dry dust and are placed side by side as building blocks to create a water tank for clean water for the school's children to drink, and to help prepare breakfast and lunch served at school.
