The 5 Best Luxury Properties for Your Patagonia Adventure

Home to a dazzling array of mountains, glaciers, grasslands, and fjords, Patagonia is one of the most remote and stunning places on earth. Why settle for second-best, then, when choosing your accommodations? The luxury lodges and hotels we recommend here are some of the most gorgeous in the Southern Patagonia region—the perfect complement to your world-class experience of Patagonia.

Patagonia stretches across Chile and Argentina, encompassing an enormous swath of land—over 400,000 square miles. The properties we recommend here are centered in and around two must-see areas in Southern Patagonia: Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina and Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. They’re ideal jumping-off points for a Southern Patagonia adventure that’s both luxurious and perfectly suited to active travelers. From trekking and horseback riding to fishing and biking, Patagonia offers it all! For even more about the region, check out our guide, Southern Patagonia: Here's What You Need to Know Before You Go.

Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina

Eolo Hotel and Estancia Cristina are two of our favorite luxury properties in El Calafate, the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park in Argentine Southern Patagonia. The region is immensely popular with travelers and outdoor enthusiasts. Rest assured, though, that you’ll feel a world away from the crowds at both of these marvelous properties.

1. Eolo Hotel

Conveniently located halfway between the city of El Calafate and Los Glaciares National Park, Eolo Hotel is one of only a few Relais & Chateau properties in Argentina.

With just 17 rooms, this 10,000-acre property provides the solitude and quiet you’re looking for, far from the hubbub of the area’s tourism.

Enjoy horseback riding, mountain biking, trekking, bird watching, and more!

2. Estancia Cristina

Estancia Cristina was founded in 1914, and it has all the old-world, pioneering charm to prove it! Located in a remote corner of Los Glaciares National Park, Estancia Cristina is accessible only by boat. The exclusive, stunning setting can’t be beat.

While day trips to Estancia Cristina are very popular, we recommend you stay overnight if at all possible. It’s a great fit for nearly every sort of traveler. And its rooms are so tasteful, cozy, and rustic—they practically beg you to curl up in front of the fireplace with a warm drink!

Enjoy 4WD and fishing expeditions, horseback riding, rekking, mountain biking, and more!

Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

The Awasi Patagonia, Tierra Patagonia, and Explora Patagonia properties are the most luxurious options in and around Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. Each has its own special qualities, so whatever your taste, there’s sure to be a perfect fit for you.

3. Awasi Patagonia

Awasi Patagonia is, without question, the most premier destination in Torres del Paine National Park. A Relais & Chateau property, Awasi is situated in an enormous private area just outside the park (important to note in an area that can get crowded).

With just 14 luxury villas and a main lodge, Awasi is small and wonderfully intimate. In addition to a private freestanding villa, guests enjoy an assigned private guide and a 4WD vehicle for unparalleled, tailor-made experiences in and around Torres del Paine.

If you’re looking to explore Patagonia privately, at your own pace, Awasi is the ideal place for you.

And if you’re interested in wildlife conservation, be sure to ask about their work protecting pumas (you can even book a “puma spotting” or “puma tracking” excursion during your stay!).

4. Tierra Patagonia

Situated just outside Torres del Paine, beside craggy mountains and beautiful Lake Sarmiento, Tierra Patagonia is visually stunning. The property’s architecture and aesthetic blend into the wild landscape for a seamless transition from the astonishing outdoors to expansive, luxurious interiors.

It’s also exceptionally sustainable. Tierra Patagonia uses LED lighting and controls its thermal efficiency to lower energy use. Tierra Patagonia is also part of a reforestation project that aims to plant one million trees across Chilean Patagonia’s national parks.

The atmosphere at Tierra is undeniably social—great for younger, adventure-minded travelers who also want the comfort of a luxury property. You’ll have plenty of space to gather and get to know your fellow travelers, often around a big fire, enjoying hors d'oeuvres. And the food here is amazing. Perfect for refueling after an intrepid day in Torres del Paine!

Unlike Awasi, shared excursions are standard at Tierra, though private excursions are available for an additional fee.

5. Explora Patagonia

Explora Patagonia, one of the oldest luxury properties in the area, boasts a prime location: it’s the only property we feature that’s actually located inside Torres del Paine National Park. With 100 rooms, it’s not as intimate as Awasi, but the proximity to top destinations within the park can’t be beat.

If you’re looking for a break from technology, you’ll be happy to know that Explora’s rooms are not equipped with televisions or Wi-Fi (though both are available in the hotel’s common careas).

Like Tierra, shared excursions are standard at Explora, though private excursions are available for an additional fee.

We’re also excited to announce that in 2020, Explora will be opening a new 50-room hotel in Los Huemules Natural Reserve, just 10.5 miles from El Chaltén. It’s the first luxury property in the region, and we look forward to sharing it with you soon!
