Saving the Elephants 10K Run in NYC - November 22

What is it?

Extraordinary Journeys is proud to announce its sponsorship and participation in the Saving the Elephants Run, a 10K through Central Park on Saturday, November 22 at 9:00am. All of the proceeds go to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, an amazing organization that focuses on conservation and the protection of Africa’s wildlife. One of their most famed projects is the Orphan’s Project which rescues, rehabilitates, and reintroduces orphaned elephants and rhinos into safer areas where they’re at a lesser risk to poachers. This run is a fundraiser for their efforts and we would love for you to join our team on what is sure to be an extremely fun day.

Why are we running?

Elephants and rhinos are facing extinction if nothing is done about the current poaching problem in Africa. Between 2010 and 2012 more than 100,000 elephants were lost to poaching, an average of more than 35,000 a year. In Tanzania, 30 elephants are killed a day. At this rate, elephants in Africa could be extinct in as little as 12 YEARS! The crisis for rhinos is equally serious. Last year, more than a thousand rhinos were lost to poaching in South Africa alone and as of September 2014, more than 750 have already been killed. This is a horrible reality, but you can help by joining our cause.

What will the day look like?

The run begins at 9:00am from the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park. Extraordinary Journeys team members will begin to congregate at the 72nd Street park entrance on the East side beginning at 8:00am. When we’re ready, we will head over together to the starting line and begin our 10K! We’ll have runners and walkers going at different paces, so you can be sure to find a buddy to go with. After we finish, we’ll host a brunch for our team members as a thank you and for a nice way to unwind and recover after a morning of exercise! (Details about the brunch will be given to those who have registered under the Extraordinary Journeys team name.) What better way to spend a crisp fall morning than running with friends and family in Central Park for a great cause?

How do I register?

Unfortunately, the run has recently reached its maximum of 500 particpants, so there are no more open spots. But there are still opportunities to get involved and enjoy the day! Extraordinary Journeys would love for you to join us for brunch following the run so long as you make a small donation to the DSWT. You can sign up for the brunch here or make a donation here. The organizers of the run could use a few more volunteers, so if you're interested in helping at the run or if you have any other questions, please email [email protected].

So spread the word! Tell your friends, family, and coworkers and join us on what is sure to be a really great day!
