Horseback Safari in Tanzania

This is the ultimate safari for avid riders who want to explore the plains of East Africa on horseback while spending each night in luxury and comfort.

Day 1~ Arusha~Onsea House

Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport, where you will be warmly greeted by your private transfer driver. A forty-five minute ride will take you to your hotel, the Onsea House.

Arusha, the “safari capital” of Tanzania is a bustling town combining the traditional and the new, where donkey carts share the road with luxury vehicles and elegant shops can be found right next to a busy market. This busy tourist center is a melting pot of Tanzania’s many ethnic groups and the place where one most feels the influence of Tanzania’s socialist policies under Nyererie. Rich or poor all Tanzanians are considered brothers and equals.

The tranquil haven of ONSEA HOUSE is located just outside the town and 30 minutes from the airport. Owned by Axel Janssens, who is the chef and manager, the goal is to be the best bed and breakfast in the area. Discreet personalized service in a relaxing setting is the hallmark of this charming home.

Overnight at Onsea House. Includes: Dinner and Breakfast.

Day 2~ Grumeti Reserve/Serengeti~Sasakwa

This morning you will fly to the Sasakwa airstrip in Singita's Grumeti Reserve in the heart of the Serengeti.

Serengeti National Park (3,646,500 acres) is the jewel in the crown of Tanzania’s protected areas. To the Maasai, it is Siringitu – “the
land that stretches on forever” and over three million large mammals roam its grasslands. The park lies between Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Victoria and adjoins Kenya's Maasai Mara to form the larger Serengeti eco-system. Each year it hosts the world famous spectacle of the migration of up to two million wildebeest, thousands of zebra and an escort of carnivores following the rains and new grass. Whether or not you are in the Serengeti during the migration, your wildlife viewing will be spectacular, as the resident population of zebra, wildebeest and predators will be there.

Settle into the lodge and have lunch looking over Sasakwa Plains. After lunch visit stables to meet the guides, listen to the ride briefing and then head out on the horses for a 2 hour ride to ensure you are comfortable with the selection of horse and tack. Return to the stables for sundowners, snacks and a chat about the following days riding and expectations.

Sasakwa is an Edwardian-style manor house with stone walls, deep verandas, high ceilings, stately furniture, silverware and ornamental pieces complete the picture. Each cottage has a private infinity-edge pool overlooking the savannah. The bedrooms with inviting four-posters are beautifully appointed, displaying typical African influences with touches of wood, leather and grass, alongside crisp linens, imported chandeliers and hand/crafted furniture.

Overnight at Sasakwa. Includes: Transfers, all activities as specified, drinks and meals.

Days 3/4 ~ Grumeti Reserve/Serengeti ~ Singita Explore (Maji Camp)

Today you will begin your adventure riding from Sasakwa to the first of two mobile camps, Singita Explore-Maji Camp.

Set out from Sasakwa around 7.30am and ride across the wide open plains with a short stop along the way for a leg stretch and packed snack. You may see herds of plains game that you are able canter along with. Arrive at the mobile camp in time for showers before lunch followed by a welcome siesta. Enjoy afternoon tea before setting out on either a short ride around the area or a game drive with sundowners.Return to camp and relax around the fire before dinner, reliving the days adventures.

The next morning enjoy tea and coffee brought to your tent and watch the sunrise over breakfast. Set off to explore the area for a morning ride. Return to camp in time for a well earned lunch. Afternoon tea is on offer from 4pm before setting out on either a short ride around the area enjoying the evening light or a game drive until the sun goes down.

Days 5/6 ~ Grumeti Reserve/Serengeti ~ Faru Faru

After breakfast this morning set off around 7am. This morning ride is longer as there is a lot of ground to cover as you head for Faru Faru Lodge.

Leave the wide open plains and enter the thicker bush area of the Grumeti River looking out for elephant, lion and buffalo. Due to the longer morning ride there will be no riding in the afternoon to allow the horses to rest up and relax in the stables.

Faru Faru River Lodge is built on a sloping hill above a beautiful water hole and the Grumeti River. In the dry season, after the herds of wildebeest have made their trek to Kenya, the Grumeti draws in large concentrations of resident wildlife. Elephant, Cape buffalo, giraffe, zebra, gazelle, and impala all seek water from the river. Because the animals gather here all throughout the year, Faru Faru offers a changing and completely private wildlife spectacle. A modern interpretation of a traditional Maasai home, the lodge blends unobtrusively into the landscape. Each suite has a large picture window facing the waterhole so that you have your own viewing area. The true specialty of Faru Faru however, is outside the lodge, on walking safaris along the river. Meals may be served in the shade of ancient acacia trees served in silver dinnerware, crystal goblets and crisp linens.

Your afternoon activities might include the spa, a game drive, a trip to the gym or just relaxing by the swimming pools. In the evening you will have the chance to meet up with other guests for pre dinner drinks and snacks around the fire.

After a day spent exploring the riverine area around Faru Faru you will return to Faru Faru for another night.

Overnight at FARU FARU. Inclusions: Soft drinks, teas & coffees, local beer and spirits, fine wines, sparkling wines, selected champagnes and cognacs

Days 7/8 ~ Grumeti Reserve/Serengeti ~ Singita Explore (Lion Rocks camp)

Arrive at Lion Rocks in time for lunch. The afternoon activity is a short ride around the area enjoying the evening light or an evening game drive, returning to camp for dinner.

This next morning set off to explore the area of hills, plains and valleys for around 5 hours. The afternoon activity is a shorter ride of 1.5 hours around the area enjoying the evening light.
